In 1983, he decided to apply to the ABC to become a Rural Reporter on regional radio. He was posted for three years to Orange in Central West NSW as trainee Rural Reporter, then was lucky enough to gain the position of Rural Reporter for the South East of SA, replacing the legendary Peter Collins.

Alan, his wife and family of 3 children spent 5 happy years in Mount Gambier, but then decided to take up the challenge of moving to Perth where Alan was appointed head of the ABC Rural Department in WA, responsible for the state "Country Hour" and the 6 regional Rural Reports.

After 7 years in Perth, the opportunity arose to come back to Mount Gambier as Regional Manager for ABC South East. Alan continued in that position until mid 2012, when he retired.

He is now actively involved in RDA Limestone Coast, the Limestone Coast Economic Diversification Forum, The Rotary Club of Mount Gambier, Roseworthy Old Collegian's Association, babysitting duties with his grand-daughter and many "shed and hobby-farm based activities"!
